A guide to move applications to SD card by Default on Android Phone

Android OS is an open source OS which means we can hack it as we want. Besides its great features, it has some drawbacks, one of which is that you cannot install application on SD card on your Android Phone. Previously, we posted a guide to copy apps from internal memory to SD Card using Link2SD. But this app is not working for some Phones such as HTC wildfire, Desire and many others. Moreover, using this app we cannot have default Apps installing feature. However, you can transfer the apps to SD card by default. Mostly Android phones are running Froyo or higher OS version. So, before we continue Please make sure that your Phone is running Froyo or higher android version. Let’s come towards the guide without wasting the time.

Pre-requisites:

Before we continue Please make sure that your Phone has Android Froyo and Android SDK Tool is installed on your PC.

How to DO?

  • USB Debugging mode and Allow Mock locations should be enabled before you proceed, to do this go to
  • “Settings > Applications > Development > check the USB Debugging Mode and Allow Mock Location

  • The next step is to Download and install SDK (Software Developer kit) for Android on your PC. Once you download it, extract the package to the folder  and then from that folder run the “SDK Setup.exe” and then simply click on the install selected option which is just located on the right bottom of the screen and follow the on screen instructions.
  • Now connect your Android Phone with PC via USB Cable.
  • Your Phone will prompt you to install missing drivers on Pc, you can install from the path android-sdk/usb_driver folder.
  • After installing the drivers, Android-SDK/tools folder and run the command Prompt. Type CD android-sdk
  • After entering into folder, type adb devices in command prompt. After giving this command, you will get the serial number of your Device, which will be starting by “H”.
  • Now enter adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2.
Here we go, you have successfully setup your Android phone to install Applications on SD Card by default. But one thing should be kept in mind that some applications can’t by used from SD card, so we recommend you that don’t install apps on SD card until your phone’s internal memory is full.
